ON THE RECORD...

Tomco Terminology

TOMCO Terminology is a list of terms and abbreviations you may run across on our website, from an "industry-specific" viewpoint. It is by no means a comprehensive listing, nor is it meant to be used for official referencing. This list is a work in progress - last updated July 22, 2009.

A-C D-F G-I J-L M-O P-R S-U V-Z
Abbrev. Term Definition and/or Common Usage
AASP Alberta Association for Safety Partnerships
An independant health and safety certifying organization.
ASME American Society of Mechanical Engineers
ASME is a professional body, specifically an engineering society, focused on mechanical engineering.
  beveling
Machining operation to produce a beveled edge at an angle other than 90 degrees. The operation is commonly used to prepare pipe ends for welding.
  chart recorder
A device used to measure input from applications where instant visual feedback is required. In the process of heat treating, the chart recorder monitors temperature and time.
CSA Canadian Standards Association
An association that works to develop standards for issues such as health and safety, quality of life, environmental protection, etc. for the protection and education of the public.
CPR Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
A procedure to support and maintain breathing and circulation for a person who has stopped breathing (respiratory arrest) and/or whose heart has stopped (cardiac arrest).
CSTS Construction Safety Training System
A course developed by the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA) providing instruction on various health and safety topics, after which a CSTS certificate is issued. CSTS training is a requirement on most job sites in Alberta.
  cold cutting
Cuts are performed mechanically without the use of flame and without producing sparks.
  controlled bolting
The ability to accurately specify and apply adequate preload on a series of fasteners to prevent failure during service life of a joint. (See hydraulic torquing)
counterbore
flange facing
Facing is the process of removing metal from the end of a workpiece to produce a flat surface. Flange facing prepares the surface of the flange to receive another flat surface.
  heat treating (metal)
Heat Treating is a method of treating metal to reduce residual stresses, achieved by increasing the temperature of a metal to a specified value and holding that temperature for a specified length of time.
  hot tap
A connection made to a pipeline while the line is under pressure or in service.
  hydraulic torquing
A procedure used to remove/tighten bolts, where rotational force on a lever on a fixed axis is applied using hydraulic equipment. The procedure allows for very precise consistent tightening of studs to prevent uneven loading or stud yielding.
H2S Hydrogen Sulfide
A colorless, toxic, flamable chemical compound often found in natural gas. Natural gas with a high H2S content is commonly called "sour gas".
  H2S Alive
A course intended for all workers in the petroleum industry who could be exposed to hydrogen sulphide (H2S).
  hydrotesting, or hydrostatic testing
Piping is filled with a nearly incompressible liquid - usually water or oil - and examined for leaks or permanent changes in shape under pressure.
ISO International Organization for Standardization
The International Organization for Standardization is the world's largest developer and publisher of International Standards
isolation
Isolate a specific work area by fitting inside the pipes to form a seal that can be monitored and at the same time provide venting capability which eliminates the potential for pressure build up behind the isolation tool.
j-prep
A prep designed for automatic welders.
NPS nominal pipe size
NPS is a North American set of standard sizes for pipes used for high or low pressures and temperatures. Pipe size is specified with two non-dimensional numbers: a nominal pipe size (NPS) based on inches, and a schedule (Sched. or Sch.).
operating pressure
The pressure at which a system is normally operated; the actual pressure under operating conditions.
PST Petroleum Safety Training
A training program developed in co-oporation with major oil companies outlining the required safety documentation for petroleum sites and focuses on behaviour towards safety and proper personal protective equipment.
psig pounds-force per square inch gauge
The pressure resulting from a force of one pound-force applied to an area of one square inch.
  pipe coring
A drilling process that requires a jig to be mounted on the pipe and the use of a Rotabroach drill.
  Portable Document Format
A PDF file is a self-contained cross-platform document. In other words, it is a file that will look the same on your computer screen (and in print) no matter what kind of computer or printer you are using or what software package was originally used to create the original file. PDF is widely used in business to transfer files via email, etc. You need Adobe Reader to view PDF files, which is offered for free download from the Adobe web site. PDF is ISO certified (see ISO 32000-1:2008)
  portable machining
Machining services performed outside of a regular machine shop environment.
PWHT post weld heat treat
Relieving post-weld metal stresses using the process of heat treating. (See Heat Treating, Stress Relieving)
  preheat
The operation of heating metal to a predetermined temperature before engaging in actual welding; preparing metal to make it more receptive to welding.
QA/QC Quality Assurance/Quality Control
Defined standards and activities intended to ensure that products (goods and/or services) satisfy customer requirements in a systematic, safe and reliable way, usually supported with written documentation, ie a QA/QC Manual.
retrofit
Measures taken to allow new or updated parts to be fitted to old or outdated assemblies.
SAGD steam assisted gravity drainage
An enhanced oil recovery technology for producing heavy crude oil and bitumen. The process involves drilling a pair of horizontal wells into the oil reservoir, then injecting low pressure steam into the upper wellbore to heat the oil and reduce its viscosity, causing the heated oil to drain into the lower wellbore, where it is then pumped out.
sch or sched schedule
"Pipe schedule" defines wall thickness of a pipe and is an indicator of the service pressure that a pipe can take. Other common abbreviations used with pipe schedules are: standard wall (STD), extra strong (XS), and double extra strong (XXS).
  stabbing bar
A tool used to guide test plugs (Griptight) into the end of the pipe.
  stress relieving
See heat treating
  stud tensioning
The application of axial force on a fastener resulting in elongation (lengthening) of the stud(s).
  stud yielding
A condition where a bolt resists loosening by normal rotational force, usually due to over-tightening, but also from rusting or other causes.
  test plug
A tool that isolates a tie-in weld for hydrotesting purposes.
  thermal stress
Stress in a metal resulting from non-uniform distribution of temperatures.
TQM Total Quality Management
Total Quality Management: a company-wide "team approach" to quality control.
WHMIS Workplace Hazerdous Materials Information System
Canada's national hazard communication program for hazardous workplace chemicals. WHMIS elements include appropriate labelling of controlled products and hazardous material, as well as comprehensive Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) and worker education and training programs.
  zone
Zone = area. Zone, in relation to chart recorders and heat treating, refers to each area where temperature is being monitored. (see chart recorders, heat treating).
